Broken rudder on a 50 foot sailing yacht – the owner was in the middle of negotiations to sell when it was noticed that the rudder was not moving correctly. A diver ascertained that the stock was badly corroded and would need to be repaired urgently. The owner had to travel away on business and SMS stepped in to manage the repairs.
With the aid of a dive team the rudder was removed and transported to a specialist company where the rudder was cut open. A new stainless stock was manufactured and the rudder rebuilt to a much stronger specification than the original. Returned to the yacht, the rudder was refitted while she was still in the water, with some difficulty but much safer and less costly than being towed and hauled out.
